Supervision
What is Supervision?
Supervision is a vibrant, interpersonally focused experience that promotes the development of therapeutic proficiency. One of the main reasons for all supervision is to make sure that the quality of therapeutic intervention with the client is of a consistently high standard in relation to the client’s needs. Consequently, supervision must be acknowledged as a cornerstone of clinical practice.
Clinical Supervision
Supervision is the term used to describe planned regular periods of time that the supervisor and supervisee spend together discussing the supervisee’s work and learning progress. Supervision is a multi-dimensional process which should provide the following functions:
1. To evaluate performance
2. To monitor levels and priorities of workload to individual case review.
3. To provide a forum to assess the therapist/client relationship and professional development.
Clinical supervision is also important as a tool to support you with elements of clinical governance in a number of ways, such as quality improvement, risk management, performance management and systems of accountability and responsibility.
It also provides a structured approach to deeper reflection in clinical practice. This can lead to improvements in practice and client care, and contribute to clinical risk management.
